The Puna Culinary Festival culminates in a spirited cook-off style competition and public tasting called PupuPalooza. Food enthusiasts will present their best appetizer to be evaluated by a panel of judges and by the public. All are welcome to attend, taste, and cast a vote for the best pupu in Puna!

2014 PupuPalooza Awards
1. Best Overall Pupu: DREW DELAWARE, RAW CHOCOLATE WITH ALIʻI MUSHROOMS
This award will be determined by our panel of judges, based on their favorite pupu. It will be judged on overall presentation, taste, appearance, and use of local ingredients.
Prize: $200 Kings’ Shops Gift Certificate, Dinner for two at Kalani, $25 Gift Certificate to Kaleo
2. Suisan People’s Choice Award: DARON KONG, LOCAL SEARED AHI
This award will be determined by the public – the pupu with the most overall votes from the tasting audience will win People’s Choice.
Prize: Spa Day at Kalani for Two (Pool Passes, Wellness Treatments, and Dinner); $50 American Express Gift Certificate courtesy of Suisan
3. Most Creative Pupu: ARIEL SILVER, SWEET POTATO GUACAMOLE
This award will be determined by our panel of judges, based on the most imaginative and original pupu. Taste and appearance will be a factor.
Prize: Dinner for 2 at Kalani, $50 Sports Authority Gift Certificate courtesy of Suisan
4. Best Presentation: BARRIE SACCAMANO, VOLCANO OMUSUBI
This award will be determined by our panel of judges, and will be awarded for the pupu with the most artistic and beautiful appearance and presentation.
Prize: Dinner for 2 at Kalani, $50 Home Depot Gift Certificate courtesy of Suisan
5. Best Use of Local Ingredients: ARIEL SILVER, SWEET POTATO GUACAMOLE
This award will be determined by our panel of judges, and will be awarded to the pupu that best features food caught, grown or produced in the District of Puna, Hawai’i Island.
Prize: Dinner for 2 at Kalani, $25 Starbucks Gift Certificate courtesy of Suisan
Entry Price: PupuPalooza tickets can be purchased at the door for $1 each. Attendees present one ticket to contestants for a taste of their pupu. Non-perishable donations to Hawaiʻi Island Food Basket are warmly welcomed!
